Medieval countable copper token, late 17th early 18th century.
A counting token, also known as a counting pfennig or just a token, are coin-like tokens (tokens) minted in Europe from the 13th to the 17th centuries.
They were used as counting pebbles for ruled abacus-like counting boards.
They were also used as money substitutes (chips) in games, similar to modern casino chips or poker chips.
Thousands of varieties of such tokens are known, mainly with images on religious and historical themes, as well as portraits; in this function, "counting pfennigs" resembled modern non-negotiable commemorative coins.
