Description: Adolf Stieler (1775-1836) was a leading German cartographer of 19th century. His famous hand-atlas [especially after the heavily revised 6th edition edited after his death by Stulpnagel, Petermann, and others] is well-known for its modern style and attention to scientific detail (though its printing technique was still an old one with steel plate engraving followed by hand coloring with visible plate marks). This very nice steel engraved western hemisphere map (Plate No. 8) was from Stieler’s Hand-Atlas [published in 1877, the 7th edition].
