METRIC PIPE & FITTING SIZING

Measure the ‘outside diameter’ (o.d.) of the pipe in millimetres.  This is the designated pipe size.

A pipe with an o.d. of 50mm is sized at 50mm.

A 50mm (o.d.) pipe will require a 50mm fitting.

With the exception of spigot fittings and reducing bushes, most metric fittings fit over the outside of the pipe.

Some domestic drainage pipes are manufactured to different sizes, standards and tolerances.  Always check the ‘outside diameter’ of your pipe to ensure compatibility.

 

IMPERIAL (INCH) PIPE & FITTING SIZING

Imperial (inch) pipe and BSP thread sizing is not straightforward.

Do NOT measure the outside diameter of the pipe and assume it is the imperial designated size.
