Seller: kevin-stanley (376) 100%, Location: Winchester, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 282266307841 A superb quality French bell strike clock dating from about 1850 The case which is made of black marble (Belgian Slate) is to a shape that is known as drumhead and is of ideal size and extremely nicely proportioned. What also distinguishes this clock is the sophistication of the engravings which are highlighted with gold and look stunning. The dimensions are height 22cm, width 36cm, depth 14cm. It has come through its one hundred and sixty years of marking the time with minimal damage and although there are some chips on the bottom of the base corners and edges, these do not really detract from its truly impressive appearance. (see pictures) The movement has two trains, which gives a single note at the half hour and strikes the hours in full on a tuneful bell. It uses the outside countwheel system of striking which was used on expensive two train clocks in the early to mid Victorian period. The clock which goes for eight days between windings. It was running recently but has not been cleaned nor stripped down so no guarantees can be given, and because of its age, it would definitely benefit from a full service. It is supplied with a pendulum and key. The dial, which features delicate roman numerals on white porcelain has a couple of hairlines and a little bit of damage between the V and VI (see pictures), but apart from that, appears to be free of cracks or other noticeable imperfections. The dial is covered by a brass bezel with raised dot decoration and fabulous cast work between this and the dial itself. It also features a thick bevelled glass. The bad news is that collection has to be from Winchester Hampshire only. However, there is lots of other horological stuff here and any collector may find a dial, a glass, spare part or movement that they need.
