ANTIQUE INDIAN  JALI,  SANDSTONE SCREEN, with remnants of  a white  colour palette from a previous incarnation. A HEAVY, SUBSTANTIAL PIECE. MUGHAL FLORAL motif.

Exquisitely hand-carved sandstone lattice screen, e arly 19th century.

A statement wall hanging, or sculptural garden feature or display.

The product of a centuries old tradition of stone carving, one can only marvel at the Indian craftmanship on display here.

A Jali, or jaali, which in Hindi means 'net', is the term used for a perforated stone or latticed screen. In Mughal times, these were used to help lower the temperatures on the hot Indian plains by compressing or funnelling  the airflow through the holes. Strategically placed, this increased the speed of the airflow and acted as ancient form of air conditioning , often passing over running water in marble gullies.

Jalis were also widely employed in buildings like the Palace of the Winds  in Jaipur, so women of the Palace could observe street life below cooled by fresh air blowing through the lattice work windows.

See without being seen, as it were.

Here endeth the physics lesson... here's Jali for the rest of us.

This exquisite early 19 th century version in Indian sandstone has been reclaimed from architectural salvage from the Bhavnagar district in Gujarat. One of several originally sourced from a screen, and one of two of a separate design on offer here from  lacewing-interiors . (SEE last photo and SEPARATE LISTING. NOW SOLD.)

In its previous incarnation, it would have graced the interior of a haveli, or grand mansion.

Today, it will add a touch of Bombay chic to any contemporary interior when displayed as a piece of art, in much the same way one hangs a picture. Or, mounted on a metal stand.

Or, perhaps hung in a garden against a crumbling brick wall, covered in a creeping clematis or similar. We saw one displayed in just such a way in a  show garden at Hampton Court Flower Show last summer and it certainly looked the part.

Height: 44.5  cms . Width:  25  cms. Depth:  5  cms. Weight:  8.6  Kgs.
