This charming antique cabinet/wall plate from the CRIES OF LONDON collection depicts a London street 'Turnip Seller' street seller and is named after her cry, namely  "Turnips & Carrots Ho!"  The scene captures a turnip and carrot seller alongside their trusty donkey, laden with baskets. A woman stands nearby, holding a bunch of fresh turnips. The round earthenware plate measures 24.5 cm in diameter.  It has pre-drilled holes for easy wall hanging and dates back to the 1920s. These plates not only serve as decorative items but also evoke the lively spirit of London’s street vendors. Whether you’re a collector or simply appreciate art with a historical flair, the “Cries of London” series by Adams is a delightful choice The captivating “Cries of London” series, which portrays street vendors and hawkers, was created in oils by the talented British artist Francis Wheatley and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1792 and 1795. Wheatley’s masterful depictions were brought to life by the Flemish born Anthony Cardon, whose engravings played a significant role in bringing these street scenes to life. The series captures the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of London’s streets and includes scenes of milkmaids, flower sellers, and other vendors, each accompanied by their distinctive cries. Despite facing personal challenges, including financial difficulties, these are sublime images that celebrate the working people of London. The “Cries of London” paintings elevate street sellers to individuals of stature and presence. Whether it’s the Strawberry Seller, Match Seller, or Primrose Seller, their assured status shines through. And in the Ballad Seller, Gingerbread Seller, and Turnip Seller , there’s an intriguing, almost erotic charge as sellers and customers meet eye to eye.
