Seller: newbostonian (213) 100%, Location: Boston, Lincolnshire, Ships to: GB, Item: 252658841790 A rare and unusual antique European Art Nouveau bed (headboard AND footboard) dating to around 1915. It has transitional Art Nouveau - Secessionist - early Art Deco features. The central carving on the headboard is very Secessionist / Art Deco whilst the vertical carvings on the frame are classic Art Nouveau stylized tulip buds or leaves. The top line of the headboard is streamlined Art Deco Moderne whilst the bases of both pieces have beautiful concave Art Nouveau arching shapes. Both the headboard and footboard measure 43.25" (110cm) wide. Originally made for a 3ft6" large single mattress (still available from all good mattress suppliers), the inset panels on both ends (tongued and grooved on the more decorative headboard and a plain panel on the less decorative footboard) measure 37.75" wide making them perfect for a standard 3ft single mattress if preferred. Both ends are 1.75" (45cm) thick. The headboard stands 35.5" (90.5cm) tall whilst the footboard is 29.25" tall. Probably from the 'Low Countries' (Belgium or The Netherlands), the bed was purchased from a Dutch antiques dealer at the Newark antiques fair 15 or more years ago. Made from pine (probably pitch pine - it's very solid and heavy!) with an intact teak coloured varnish finish which has been maintained and recently recoated with hardwearing traditional varnish. This is not as red as the flash photographs of the close-up details suggest! The rest of the images show a more accurate mellow colour. Ready to use. Normal age/usage wear. No splits. Wax filled slither chip on extreme edge of footboard only (see last images). The footboard top appears to have been lowered in the past (cut down). Slots on invisible inside lower of both pieces were designed to take plain connecting planks (not present when I purchased the bed - I have seen similar in vintage photographs). I've used the bed with conventional 'Vono' bed irons attached; screw holes are ready drilled for these (not provided - most auction houses/house clearance businesses give these away if you need them). Otherwise simply drill through the ends to screw or bolt to any modern divan or wooden bed base. The footboard weighs around 9kg; the headboard is much heavier than my 10kg postal scales can weigh! The bed ends can be parcelled up to post but unfortunately they would be over the weight limit (35kg or more) sent together (and I wouldn't be able to lift the pair together!). They are too bulky for MyHermes, so it would mean 2 separate Parcelforce parcels. Luckily the largest piece - the headboard - is just fractionally within the normal size limits for Parcelforce 48 and 24, just barely escaping being a 'large parcel' for which a premium is charged. I estimate 1 parcel at 20kg and 1 parcel at 15kg for which I have obtained the quotes below: Parcelforce Express 48 (2 days, £100 cover per parcel): £34.20 + £27.75 = £61.95 Parcelforce Express 24 (1 day, £100 cover per parcel): £39.60 + £33.15 = £72.75 Much better collected in person from Boston, Lincolnshire by arrangement, or send a haulier/remover of your choice to collect on your behalf which should be cheaper than posting costs. There are several good services advertizing collection and delivery of antique items on eBay and I can suggest a good one if you need them. Condition: In great ready to use antique condition with intact hardwearing traditional varnish coating. Normal age/usage wear. No splits. Wax filled chip on edge of footboard only (see images). Footboard top appears to have been lowered in the past (cut down). Slots on invisible inside lower of both pieces were designed to take plain connecting planks (not present). I've used the bed with conventional bed irons attached; screw holes are ready drilled for these (not provided). Otherwise simply drill through to bolt to any modern divan or wooden bed base., Product Type: Bed, Original/Reproduction: Original, Style: Art Nouveau, Age: 1900-1950, Material: Pine, Specific age: c.1910-1920
