Seller: thechapterhouse (619) 100%, Location: Gloucestershire, Ships to: GB, Item: 331878176459 Antique Georgian Hide Trunk Domed Original Makers Label English Circa 1815 This ancient trunk could have just been unloaded from the whale ship Essex, the famous Nantucket whaling ship destroyed by the huge sperm whale in 1821, the inspiration for Melville's Moby Dick. Or perhaps have just made its way by stage coach from the rural countryside to London as in a Jane Austen novel. We forget just how arduous travel was in this period with awful road surfaces on the less busy routes, non-luxurious horse drawn coaches that could squeeze up to six passengers (who would be strangers), the ever present highway crime and of course, not forgetting bad weather...... We adore these ancient travelling cases as they fit in so well with period or modern day interiors. This gorgeous survivor can be dated exactly to the 1815 period from the original trade label to the inside of the trunk. According to the Birmingham Wrightsons trade directory William Jones was operating in the New Street, Birmingham district as a trunk and paper box maker in 1815 (and maybe before). During an age of sail and travelling overland by carts and carriages, storage was an important and relevant trade. Trunks had to be strong and resistant to wind, rain and freezing temperatures as they would travel on top of stage coaches. This domed trunk with copper stud inlay retains all of its original fittings, except its key. Size: 18" (46 cm) by 11" (28 cm) by 8" (20 cm). Condition: Please do not expect perfection here. By its very nature this trunk has had a hard life. The leather hide is faded, dry and brittle in places with some hair loss and bare patches. The perimeter central leather flap that storm proofs where the lid and base meet is wrinkled and shrunken. There is no key. The interior retains nearly all of its original paper lining but this is fragile and delicate. The original label is just a fantastic read. The copper nails are in good sound order. This is a sound and solid item of early 19th century luggage that although unsuitable for travel in the 21st century now makes a fantastic display item. PLEASE NOTE - A signature will be required upon delivery. The buyer MUST provide us with a telephone number at the point of purchase as this is a requirement for booking the courier.
