It is French and is marked 'L.F' in a shield, with Paris above it. As far as I can make out, this is for Fernier (Louis et Frère), but there is not much further information available. I would have said it dates from the early 1900s. It is fitted with a nice quality, jewelled, compensated lever platform escapement, with a silvered platform, giving the clock good timekeeping. The clock has had a very full service which involved being fully dismantled, including the platform escapement (jewels removed for cleaning where possible), then having both a manual and ultrasonic clean. After it was checked and had all necessary work done on it, it was re-assembled and oiled. There is evidence of it having previous work done on it. It is now in excellent mechanical condition, running very strongly, and keeping good time. When stripped down, the mainspring was removed from its barrel - it was found to be rather weak and tired, so was replaced with a new one, properly lubricated. The mainspring is the 'heart' of your clock, so it is important that it is serviced properly. There are six pictures at the end of the listing which show the movement assembled before being put back into its case. The clock naturally runs for its full length of wind which is over eight days. The movement and balance have been left with their original finish as it is very good, although there are naturally some age related marks. After cleaning, all surfaces were treated with special clock wax to help preserve this finish. It comes with its double ended brass carriage clock key. The clock is wound and set by the key through the glazed back door. The original enamel dial is excellent - there are a few odd marks, but no hairlines. It is mounted on a separate dial plate, which is a sign of a good quality clock. This does give the clock a little more depth than the standard carriage clock. The hands are blued steel and are excellent. All glasses are bevelled, including the top oval one, and are excellent - I will mention there is one very tiny chip inside on the top edge of the front glass which is just visible - this looks to have been there many years, possibly from new. The good quality polished brass case has a few very slight marks accumulated over the years, but these are extremely minimal. The case is numbered inside and is all original, the back door closes nice and tight as it should, the handle is tight, and it has its baseplate. The case was fully dismantled - the lacquered finish on it is very good, so it was left, rather than re-polishing it. It has a nice, golden colour, as old brass normally has. Just to be on the safe side, it has been coated in a very high quality wax polish especially made for the brass plates and cases of clocks, which acts has a tarnish inhibitor. Its travelling case is very good for its age, apart from the strap, which has seen better days. However, at least the strap is there - they are normally missing. It has its original, slide-in, blanking panel for the front, which is contained in a compartment behind the clock. The key also sits in its own little compartment. The catch and button are good and work perfectly, and the hinges are very good. It does, naturally, have some light age related wear in places both inside and out, but generally is very good. The deep purple velvet lining is very good, with just one small torn piece. The case never originally had a front glass - there is no provision for one. The clock stands approximately 11cm tall to the top of the case, and is just over 14.1/2cm tall to the top of the handle when it is up. The base width is approximately 7.1/2cm and the depth approximately 6.1/2cm. This is a very nice, good quality clock. I have tried to be very accurate with my description and mention everything I feel the buyer should know, however, please contact me if you have any further questions. If you are new to buying/collecting antique and collectable clocks, I can give you instructions on the general care of them, and how to regulate them for timekeeping, if you are interested. When you win the auction - please let me know. UK mainland 24 hour shipping will be by UPS - the clock will be double boxed in new boxes to ensure that it reaches you in perfect condition. I welcome overseas bidders - shipping will be by Royal Mail, but if you are in Europe, there may be cheaper options for shipping by carrier, depending on your country. Please ask, letting me know which country you are from, and I will get a price. Please see the pictures below If you are bidding on any of my other auctions, I will combine postage on multiple items. Items paid for by Paypal will only be sent to the Paypal verified address. All UK items will be sent, unless otherwise stated, by Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded. All items, if under the maximum weight limit of 2kg when packed, will be sent overseas by Royal Mail Airmail International 'Signed For' service unless otherwise stated. Items are now sent this way to conform to eBay/Paypal regulations that safeguard both the buyer and the seller. This can make the shipping charge, particularly for overseas bidders, higher than possibly expected as the Recorded/Signed For service adds to the UK postage, particularly to the overseas postage. I can accept no responsibility in the very rare event that items get lost in the post, but I will endeavour to do all I can to help the buyer by contacting Royal Mail and getting them to do the necessary search. Please be aware that it is illegal to falsify the value or contents on Customs documentation and under no circumstances will I do this.
