Antique Stationery Box. Edwardian Oak Sloped Desk Top Stationery Cabinet. (745)

A Handsome Edwardian Desk Top Stationery Box .

A well fitted oak stationery box dating from the Edwardian Period.  The box stands on a simple bevelled plinth.  Two sloping doors set on 4, four barrel polished brass hinges, and a ogee shaped top plate set on 2 three barrel polished brass hinges open to reveal the extensively fitted interior.  The LH door has a neat polished brass spring clasp the secures it closed in a brass plated rebate.  The RH door is set with a polished brass shield.  The base of the cabinet houses a neatly rebated drawer.  The remainder of the cabinet is divided into thirteen compartments for storage of stationery etc.  The top section holds an oblong tray subdivided into eight sections.  The three front sections have cute little windows that together with printed cards form a perpetual calendar.  The RH door is fitted with a frame to holder notebooks etc.  The LH door is fitted with criss-cross black ribbon secured by polished brass pins to hold cards etc and two polished brass swivels to secure further items eg a notebook.

Dimensions:  The cabinet measures 32cm tall x 32cm wide x 27cm.

Weight:  4kg's

Condition: In good used antique condition.  The cabinet is sound in its construction and functions as intended.  The wood has been well waxed over the years and has a lovely sheen.  The wood is aged and has a well developed patina.  There are also some bumping to the base plate, surface marks, and minor age/shrinkage related cracks that in our mind are part of the character of the cabinet  All brass is clean, polished and bright.  The calendar cards are complete, legible and complete.   The cabinet does have a lock and keeper plate fitted but for some reason the escutcheon has been covered with the brass shield at some point of its life.  The ribbon and cards are not original.

A handsome and useful antique Edwardian stationery cabinet that displays beautifully and is hard to find this well fitted.
