This antique Wedgwood Etruria dinner/soup plate, originating from England in the late Victorian era, boasts a beautiful blue colour and a round shape. The plate, measuring 21 cm (8 2/4") in diameter and 3.5 cm (1 3/8") in height, is made from fine porcelain and bears the impressed Wedgwood backstamp, along with impressed 3-letter date code (AAS, i.e. April 1890). While dating by the year of 1864 is also possible, in my view 1890 (based on the presence of the last letter S within the date code) is the most plausible year of this plate's manufacturing. It should also be noted that the plate also carries an impressed ETRURIA ENGLAND stamp. The latter word of the stamp is even more interesting, considering the convention that the impressed ENGLAND mark is generally being used after 1891, i.e. a year later than the date of this plate. The existence of this plate therefore makes it possible to correct this convention and to suggest that the ENGLAND stamp had been used as early as 1890.
This original Victorian era Wedgwood piece is a nice example, without any damage, but just some manufacturing imperfections of glazing and signs of age and wear, including the fine craquelure, well visible under some magnification and certain angle.
