JS(CC)53d RAF cover commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Spitfire in RAF Squadron Service in July 1938. The cover artwork is by respected aviation artist Brian Petch and shows a Spitfire Mk 1 of No 19 Squadron in 1938 and a Mk XXIV (24) of No 80 Squadron in 1952. No 19 Squadron was the first RAF squadron to receive Supermarine Spitfires replacing their Gloster Gaunlet biplanes at RAF Duxford in July 1938. No 80 Squadron was the last RAF squadron to operate Spitfires flying from RAF Kai Tak in Hong Kong through until January 1952. The cover bears Nevis Spitfire stamp showing Spitfires having just shot down a V-1 flying bomb. The cover bears 60th Anniversary of the Spitfire in RAF Squadron Service cachet. This cover has been hand signed by Wing Commander Gordon Sinclair OBE DFC, who was with No 19 Squadron when the Spitfires first arrived and was the first airman to crash land a Spitfire (although not his fault). He stayed with No 19 Squadron to see action during Dunkirk and was then with No 310 Squadron during the Battle of Britain scoring a great number of victories and becoming a respected 'fighter ace'. Official special, numbered and certified on reverse.
