We present a  super quality landscape study in oils, we know as Market Street in the old rural town of Northampton in England, at the height of winter and embedded in heavy snows.   This is an early work by the artist,  one of two featured in this auction, dating around 1935, by the celebrated Northamptonshire artist George Herbert Buckingham Holland (1901 – 1987).  We believe the work is indistinctly signed lower right, probably masked by the frame surround – Holland did not sign his early paintings or signed to verso - the work dates c1935. And is from a folio of the artist’ work   George Holland was a prolific painter of portraits, still life and landscapes.  Born in Northampton, England, 1901, Holland trained at the Northampton School of Art and the Leicester College of Art between 1918 and 1923.  Primarily a portrait painter, Holland found himself much in demand throughout his career, mostly painting local dignitaries, with three of his works in the collection of the National Portrait gallery.  Holland maintained a studio in the 1930s in Chelsea besides a studio in George Street, Northampton; he moved back to Northampton in 1939, where he remained for the rest of his life.  As a landscape painter, Holland captured many aspects of rural life throughout the county of Northamptonshire.  George Herbert Buckingham Holland exhibited 6 times at the Royal Academy, 3 at the ROI, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Society of Arts.  He was president of the Northampton Art Society 1949 – 1950 ,as one of its founding members.  Many examples of the work of George Herbert Buckingham Holland can be seen on artprice.com, arcadia.com, findartunfo.com, artnet.com besides the auction sites of bonhams.com, christies.com and several provincial auction sites.  Presented in good overall condition in its original frame,  this painting will look fabulous displayed
