E6013 MILD STEEL GENERAL PURPOSE RUTILE ELECTRODES
These are high quality electrodes from a certified source: test certs are available on request.
Characteristics
These electrodes are especially suitable for welding in sheets thinner than 5 mm. They are suitable for welding galvanized sheets and tubes, primer painted, painted and slightly rusty steels and in production of tanks and boilers, tube installations. Very easily operated in positional welding, including vertically-down. Good gap-bridging. Smooth arc, well suited for tack-welding due to its easy arc striking and re-striking properties. It is possible to use these electrodes equally well both with AC and DC. Welds are smooth, slightly concave and blending into base metal without undercutting. Slag is self-releasing.
Stick Welding FAQ
Welding Electrodes come in standard diameters: 1.6mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3.2mm, 4mm. The stated diameter refers to the thickness of the core wire. Then the welding flux is added to the outside of the electrode.
What size do I need? As a rough guide, the electrode will weld steel from a little bit less than its’ own thickness to about twice its’ thickness as a very rough guide, although this depends on what you are doing. You can also build welds up with multiple passes with a thin rod. If you are new to welding start with a 3.2mm diameter as these are easier to use than the smaller ones. If you try to weld 1mm sheet with a 2.4mm rod you'll struggle as you'll need more amps to melt the rod than the sheet can take, without blowing through. If your welder will only manage 2.4 or 3.2 rods and you want to weld thicker materials, that's ok you'll just have to do more runs. Storage When you receive your welding rods, keep them somewhere warm and dry like the airing cupboard if possible.
Amperage
For 3.2mm electrodes use about 110 amps. if you want to use 2.5mm rods reduce the current to about 80 amps - the current is determined more by the rod size than the thickness of sheet. Don’t be frightened to adjust the amps according to the performance of your electrode, i.e. if you want it to be a bit more fierce, turn the amps up!
Polarity DCEP (rod positive, earth negative - this is the opposite of the polarity used in TIG). Use AC if that's all you have.
