This is a 'Buy it Now' for an 1882 Egypt Medal (undated Rev.) with the Suakin 1885 clasp, which is correctly named to:

6040. PTE. A. FIELD. M. S. CORPS.

Andrew Field was born in Brighton, Sussex.

He attested for service with the army in Brighton on 4 July 1884 for a 12 year (7+5) engagement, electing to serve with the Army Hospital Corps, with his age given as 23 years and 9 months and his occupation noted as a Baker's Labourer. His height is given as 5' 5" tall and with a 35"chest.

Two months later in September 1884 after  allegations surfaced of neglect of the sick and wounded during the Egypt campaign of 1882,  the Army Hospital Corps was disbanded and replaced by the Medical Staff Corps, with Andrew's service being transferred over to the new corps while he was still serving at Aldershot.

On 17 February 1885 he arrived in Egypt, and is confirmed on the roll as serving with the Medical Staff Corps detachment during the Suakin campaign, earning him the medal, clasp and Khedive Star for his service. He then returned home to the UK on 8 September 1885 and was posted back to Aldershot.

In the 1891 Census he is noted as a Private serving with the Medical Staff Corps attached to the 1st and 16th Divisions, based at South Camp, Aldershot.

From 1890 onwards his medical sheet notes his health starting to  deteriorate, most notably with rheumatism and a problem with his tendons. This gets to the point that when he tries to extend to 21 years pensionable service, during his medical he is found to be no longer fit for service, then he was discharged shortly after on 14 July 1896 after just over 11 years service.

This is where it gets interesting, as we believe Andrew lied about his age when he joined the army and that he was actually 33 years old on joining, ten years older than he states on attestation, as in  all the records we can find there is only one Andrew Field who was born and lived in Brighton.

In the 1851 Census he is noted as an infant, the son of Hannah and John Field, a Greengrocer living in Brighton. In the 1871 Census he is living at the Brighton Pavilion with his occupation noted as a Draper, and in the 1881 Census he is still at the Brighton Pavilion with his occupation now noted as a Carpet Beater and Porter.  He then disappears in the 1891 Census from Brighton, and the only Andrew Field born in Brighton is now serving with the Medical Staff Corps at Aldershot, but is suddenly 10 years younger.

On leaving the army he quite likely moved back to the Brighton area, as an Andrew Field is recorded as dying in Lancing, Sussex on 19 November 1897.

More research certainly required and possible, the medal is in a good VF condition with only the odd light contact mark from the Star.

Documents include ten (10) pages of his service records which contain a lot more information on Andrew, with his medical notes also being quite extensive. A copy of the Egypt/Suakin Roll is also included confirming his award, as well as the 1891 Census listing him with the Med Staff Corps at Aldershot South Camp. We will also include details of who we think John is before he joined the army, born in December 1850. These include copies of the 1851, 1871 and 1881 Census, as well as details of his birth and death. We will put all these documents onto a CD for the buyer.
