Seller: bigbiffo-uk (224) 100%, Location: Newtown, Ships to: GB, Item: 262727650038 A rare opportunity to own a quality Elliott 8 day twin chime long case clock in Honduras Mahogany owned from new,it has a twin chime,Westminster and Whittington, with an automatic night time shut off from 11pm until 7am it also has a manual shut off lever should you need to silence the clock during the day. Elliott was one of last true English clock makers who ceased manufacture in 1998,the writing was on the wall for the company in the 1970`s when cheap imported clocks flooded the market,Elliot, with the quality it had represented for 100 years couldn`t compete and sales began to fall with their eventual demise in 1998. I ordered the clock in 1973 it was finished in May 1974,the movement was hand built by one individual craftsman as this was the Elliott tradition. The case is made from the finest and rare Honduras mahogany(Swietenia macrophylla) a wood noted as the best for any clock case as it never shrinks, warps, swells or cracks in any temperature extremes as you find in centrally heated houses of today. The style of the clock is Georgian with a domed pediment, the arched door closes tightly against dust and debris and the glass is perfect, the dial is made up of a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and outer 5 minute markers, the dial is in heavy quality brass and finely engraved with acanthus leaves, the cherub corner spandrels are in muted brass with a cartouche engraved Tempus Fugit (time flies) above the dial, both hands are in blued steel and in perfect condition. The movement has a platform balance that requires no setting up after transit and can be transported flat in most larger family cars(minus the family and the seats down)it`s made from the finest heavy gauge English brass and the toughest of Sheffield steels and is easily maintained,it strikes on two chimes,a Westminster and a Whittington,a wheel on the movement defines which and chimes on each quarter, the clock has been well maintained throughout it`s lifetime with a complete overhaul being carried out in September 2015 when a new strike spring replaced a weakened one,the clock keeps exceptionally good time with just a minute either way over the period of a week, there are a few age related marks to the clock but hardly noticeable with a nice patina from the years of waxing.I chose this style of clock for it`s slender trunk and `unfussy` attitude from other, more ornate styles,it`s graced every home I`ve lived in,ancient and modern, from leafy sunny Surrey to some of the highest mountainous regions of North Wales and it`s never failed me. The original key was the weak link in the Elliott chain as it couldn`t cope with the powerful springs in the movement and snapped along with a new replacement, there is however a key with the clock that has stood the test of time. A very quiet clock that would give elegance, presence and grace to any household, not vintage yet (43 years old) but well on it`s way to becoming a future valuable family heirloom and a fine antique. Measurements are appx:- height 77 inches...width 16 inches...depth 10 inches. The clock can be collected from my North Powys home due to it`s size, weight, value and condition so UK buyers only,I am prepared to deliver the clock free within 100 miles from my home if the asking price is reached and within mainland UK,previewing is very welcome. Any questions, measurements or further photographs please email me...thank you.
