GENUINE DANCED dayak soul catcher hudoq mask. Indonesian tribal art borneo. A rare and used hudoq masks used during the dayak of borneo's thanksgiving festival.
This is the only type of this style I have seen before.
Hudoq masks are carved of the "pests" the farmers wish to chase off, the crow is the most popular followed by the pig, this seems to represent a human. The dance goes on for hours and moves from village to village over a period of time.
This dance is still very popular today.
This mask is apparently a few decades old.
It shows signs of being 'danced' on the back, with rubbing and sweat marks on the back of the mask.
It shows signs of being repainted numerous times which is common with these types of mask. Which has left it with a slight glossy pink colour.
Mouth bar still in tact
It has mirrored eyes and the basket is still in tact.
The basket would have hornbill feathers attached for decoration but due to them being on the endangered species list it's illegal to export so it's very rare to still find them attached.
