Seller: www-hohobird-com (75) 100%, Location: Hyde, Ships to: GB, Item: 222328014059 We are professional clock dealers so you can trust what you read here and buy confidently as an Xmas gift. This is a restored English wall clock from the 1940s by the sought after maker ASTRAL supplied to the military for use in a NAAFI (Navy Army and Air Force Institutes) recreational establishment for soldiers and their families. Supplied at the end of World War Two, materials were in short supply so this one has a Bakelite surround screwed to it's original wooden back box. Similar RAF clocks examples exist with these Bakelite surrounds as well as some made of plywood. It was assembled by John Garnet of London who is the documented supplier of NAAFI clocks. The movement was made by Astral of Coventry - It's the same '123' model seen in RAF clocks and sometimes carries the Smith's brand. The clock has been professionally prepared whilst trying to retain as much of the character and history as possible, as described further below. The movement needs winding once a week with the supplied key. It is a 'platform' rather than a pendulum movement, so it is easy to set up and won't stop if it gets slightly knocked out of position. These models don't strike or chime. They are very quiet for mechanical clocks and sound more like a mechanical watch rather than a pendulum clock. Condition Report: - The clock is restored as described and fully tested and working. It is keeping very good time and running for the full intended duration of one week. - The Bakelite surround to the case is in very good order without any breaks or cracks. - The back box of the case (hidden when on the wall) shows more signs of it's age. The fixing holes on the back have become worn over the years (to access the movement). The 'hanger' has been used at the top and the bottom - indicating that at some point the clock's home required the bezel to hinge from the left, rather than the right as originally intended. - The dial has been gently restored following the original pattern, Note it is a restoration not a repaint (to preserve the history) so the off white ground still shows some colour variation and the marks you'd expect from its circa 75 years of age. - The original brass bezel (opening door which holds the glass) has it's original sight ring to hold the glass in place. The brass has been polished to a nice clean finish but not so much that it looks new. - The movement has benefited from a professional clean and service (fully stripped, cleaned in an ultra sonic tank, the bearing surfaces polished before rebuilding, correctly oiling and testing). Overall diameter of the case is a touch under 15" and the total depth is 4 1/4" Unfortunately we are unable to offer warranties at ebay prices, but warrant that it is correctly described, and will be available on the phone to help you with set-up or should you run into difficulties later. This is a very simple clock to set up, but we will still be available on the phone and email if you have any questions. No crazy offers please. This is an interesting and properly prepared clock. Collection is obviously preferred and is easy to arrange from near Hyde Manchester (we are near the top of the M67). You'll be able to see it working and get a cup of tea. We do have experience of posting these, although the time and cost of proper packaging does add up. Please note the glass can get damaged in transit (at your risk) although we work very hard to limit the chances of that happening.
