Seller: www-hohobird-com (75) 100%, Location: Hyde, Ships to: GB, Item: 222328020144 We are professional clock dealers so you can trust what you read here and buy confidently as an Xmas gift. This is a restored English wall clock from the 1940s by the sought after maker SMITHS. Many clocks now incorrectly carry the popular Smiths name, so do take care if you are after a real Smiths. This is a totally original example and retains the original dial ground and blackwork. The case retains it's original finish. This is much preferable to having newly refinished surfaces but it does mean the clock shows (desirable) signs of it's circa 75 year's life. The movement has been professionally cleaned and serviced prior to offer here. It has a solid mahogany case, it's original brass bezel which holds the glass. The painted steel dial is 12" in diameter with the original Arabic numerals (handy for teaching children to tell the time vs Roman numerals). Original painted steel hands. The movement needs winding once a week with the supplied key. It is a 'platform' rather than a pendulum movement, so it is easy to set up and won't stop if it gets slightly knocked out of position. These models don't strike or chime. They are very quiet for mechanical clocks and sound more like a mechanical watch rather than a pendulum clock. Condition Report: - The clock is restored as described and fully tested and working. It is keeping very good time and running for the full intended duration of one week. - The case is in very good order without any breaks or cracks. Because it retains its original finish, there are rubs and knocks to that finish. We've shown as example in the 3rd detailed photo and there are some more visible in the 2nd photo below the '25 past' and 'half past'. These are just expected age related rubs and knocks and much better than a newly french polished finish. The case has been correctly waxed to a nice shine. - The case has some spots and dribbles of paint to the backbox. These can't be seen once hung on the wall, and removing them would have meant repolishing the case. The paint is a soft green very commonly used by the civil service - who would have been the expected customer from Smiths - so forms part of its history. - The dial is in super order and cleaner than expected. There are some signs of age as we've tried to capture in the photos, but it's a lovely original period dial. The is just one small slight dent to the dial, about 1cm long. I've been unable to capture on the photos. If you look at the centre of the dial, between the centre of the hands and the winding hole, you may just be able to see it about 1cm to the left of centre. - The original brass bezel (opening door which holds the glass) has it's original sight ring to hold the glass in place. The brass has been polished to a nice clean finish but not so much that it looks new. - The movement has benefited from a professional clean and service (fully stripped, cleaned in an ultra sonic tank, the bearing surfaces polished before rebuilding, correctly oiling and testing). Overall diameter of the case is a touch over 15" and the total depth is 4" Unfortunately we are unable to offer warranties at ebay prices, but warrant that it is correctly described, and will be available on the phone to help you with set-up or should you run into difficulties later. This is a very simple clock to set up, but we will still be available on the phone and email if you have any questions. No crazy offers please. This is an original and properly prepared clock. Collection is obviously preferred and is easy to arrange from near Hyde Manchester (we are near the top of the M67). You'll be able to see it working and get a cup of tea. We do have experience of posting these, although the time and cost of proper packaging does add up. Please note the glass can get damaged in transit (at your risk) although we work very hard to limit the chances of that happening.
