The Glasgow & South Western Railway was formed in 1847 and there are 2 main sizes of destination label. The large label, mainly with printed station of origin measures around 85/90mm x 55/60mm and the oblong labels, used mainly at smaller stations are around 87mm x 36mm.

Pre-grouping railway labels from England, Wales & Scotland date from before January 1923, when the GWR became larger and the LMS, LNER & SR were formed from an amalgamation of Companies in their area of operation. In turn these Companies were nationalised on 1st January 1948 to form British Railways. Stock codes may be shown, sometimes the printer and/or quantity printed and if a date is shown, eg: 2-98, 1/23, it signifies the month & year of printing or if 16-7-95, the day also, in the 19th or 20th century
