Fossils - Our Key To The Past
Fossils are the preservaed remains of animal and plant life from the past. Any preserved evidence of former life can be called a fossil. Normally it is the hard parts of an animal which are fossilised (shells, coral structures, bone and teeth) but even animaltracks (e.g, dinosaur footprints) have the potrntail to be preserved by the process of fossilization.
In Ireland fossils occur in many kinds of sedimentary rocks such as limestones & shales, which were deposited in tropical seas millions of years ago.
Fossils are of great scientific importance as they provide information on the age of rocks and evidence for the evolution of living organisms. They also show how the climate has changed.
Fossil corals found in Ireland's limestone areas formed coral reefs in past times when the irish climate was a lot warmer.
When cut and polished fossils are interesting, colourful and have a unique beauty of their own. It is not surprising that they have been used for adornment and decoration since ancient times.
