Before finding fame as a Fairlight-sporting composer of 1980s TV soundtracks, Jan Hammer was the bandleader of his own jazz-funk combo. "Don't You Know", which was first released as a single way back in 1977, is undoubtedly one of the group's best outings - a kind of missing link between Rotary Connection, Herbie Hancock, and 1980s proto-Balearica. This limited edition 12" features the superb original and an extended rework from Munich-based scalpel fiend Alkalino. He's version is undoubtedly tastefully done and in-keeping with the sweet and dreamy feel of the original, even if it does include a metronomic new, DJ-friendly beat pattern underneath.
