Short Description:  Large framed original antique print, William Hogarth Southwark Fair 1733

Size: Size of frame 63 x 55 cm, print inside mount 48 x 38 cm

Age: 1733 engraving, 1837 printing from original Hogarth plate

Condition: The print is in good antique condition, with a couple of stains not immediately obvious. In a new mount and a used "Hogarth" frame which has some very small losses but is overall very good.

Detailed description:

This wonderfully busy and detailed print was drawn and engraved by Hogarth in 1733, just before the publication of his series A Rake's Progress, and was intended as a coda to that series, although published before it. It was originally delivered to the subscribers of A Rake's Progress.

The print is so full of detail that Paulson devotes two and a half pages to it in his Hogarth's Graphic Works (Paulson 131).  It is a dramatic evocation of the hubbub of a London fair of its time.

This print is from the 1837 edition which was effectively the last to be published using Hogarth's original engraved plates, altered very little from the first engraving.  This edition was published, by Baldwin Cradock and Joy, in parts to subscribers and is of very high quality, on wove paper.
