Seller: rule6b (1,519) 100%, Location: London, Ships to: GB, Item: 162302458265 Stock no. 8124.A Victorian period Macassar Ebony Veneered Brass Bound Casket with flush fitting carrying handles, the fitted interior has a pair of open topped containers which swing to the sides to reveal a storage space beneath, the front conceals two spring operated drawers which are controlled by brass push buttons fitted to the inside rear of the case. No makers marks.English, circa 1840. A similar Casket, veneered in Coromandel, is in the Royal Collection, a Jubilee present from the Nation, it contains a Compendium of Games with solid gold and silver pieces. Judging by the faint aromas this Casket, although not airtight has been used for storing cigars. Measurements : 410mm. x 325mm. x 310mm. Weight : 9650 grams. Condition : The exterior in good original condition with a restored shrinkage split to the front edge of the top, the base is lined in new green baize. There are old repairs, notably one of the swing trays has a replacement lining, both of the spring operated draws have replacement back ends and one has a new brass catch plate fitted to the underside. We speculate to repair damage caused by being forced open by someone who did not know how the mechanism operated. There is a compartment to the rear which may originally have had a liner.Overall it is in showroom condition, commensurate with its age and use.
