George Henry Tewkesbury was born in Ilchester in Somerset on 30 April 1880, the son of Amelia and George Henry Tewkesbury, an Agricultural Labourer. George's birth was registered in Yeovil in the third quarter of 1880, and on 30 May 1880 he was baptised at the Parish Church in Ilchester by the Rector, E.F. Hopkinson.

In the 1881 and 1891 Census the family are living in Ilchester.

On 1 November 1897, George attested for service with the army in Yeovil, signing-on for a 12 (7+5) year engagement with the Colours, taking his medical the next day in Taunton and electing to serve with the Royal Artillery, service number 23748. His aged is given as 18 years old and with his occupation noted as a Carter.

George served in the UK until 5 December 1899, when he was shipped to South Africa for service in the 2nd Anglo-Boer War with 19th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He remained with the battery in South Africa until 28 June 1904, when he was returned to the UK due to the completion of his terms of engagement.

He was then discharged to First Class Reserve on 4 July 1904, then was finally discharged at Woolwich on 31 October 1913, with his address noted at 20 Portway Street, Taunton in Devon.

There is a note on his QSA and KSA Rolls which says, 'RHC enquiry 18/11/43', Royal Hospital Chelsea perhaps ? this needs looking into further.

In the second quarter of 1907 George is listed as getting married to Dora Whitcomb in Wells, and in the 1911 Census they are  living in Street, Somerset with their 8 month old daughter, Gladys Amy, and with George's occupation given as, Skin Trade, Rug Manufacturer. Their second child, Reginald, was born on 19 June 1911.

A year after being discharged George rejoined the army for service in the Great War, once again serving with the Royal Field Artillery, service number 57692. He first entered the Theatre of War in France on 28 July 1915, earning himself a 1914-15 Star Trio.

In the 1939 National Register, George, Dora and Reginald are living at Upper Lullington near Frome in Somerset, with George's occupation noted as a 'Woodman on Estate'.

George Henry Tewkesbury is recorded at dying at Upper Lullington, Somerset on 15 March 1947, he was aged 65 and is is buried in All Saints Churchyard in Lullington.

All the medals are in good VF condition or better with old pieces of ribbon attached and mounted on some card, which fit into a plastic wallet as shown in photo eight.

We've only briefly scanned over his documents for the above information and these certainly need further scrutiny.

Documents include copies of his birth registration, baptism, the 1881 Census (family on two pages) the 1891 and 1911 Census. George was in South Africa for the 1901 Census. Also included are details of his marriage, the 1939 National Register as well as his death registration and details of his burial. Military documents include six pages of his Victorian service records and a document showing his RA transfer to the Reserve, plus medals rolls for his QSA (2), KSA, 1915 Star and BWM and VM, as well as his Medal Index Card.

These 23 pages of documents will come on a CD for the buyer, with still plenty of scope for more research.
