Not to be confused with the famous Monty Python "Spam" Song Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's  "Viking Song,"
Eaton Faning's Song of the Vikings is a similar martial tune performed by Billy Murray with the Orpheus Male Chorus and brass band

This is also one of the rare recordings of Pol PLancon student, the American Bass Thomas Foster Why

Hardy Williamson

English concert and oratorio tenor. In the 1910s, he was active in and around New York City, singing his customary concerts, but also comprimario roles (Tybalt, Remendado) with the Century Opera Company. He must also have studied in New York, since he was a pupil of basso Yeatman Griffith, who taught voice there. His 1920s Vocalion recordings were made in London, so he would seem to have gone back to England by then.

Title: Song of the Vikings
Composer: Joseph Eaton Faning
Lyricist: Somerville Gibney
Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB
Genre: Secular, Partsong

Language: English
Instruments: Piano
First published: 1901 Novello and Co.

The wind is blowing from off the shore,
And our sail has felt its force,
For our bark bounds forth o'er the crested waves
As a wild and restive horse.

Our sharp prow cleaves the billows,
And breaks them into spray,
And they brightly gleam in the glad sunlight
As we speed upon our way, as we speed upon our way.

Lords of the waves we are,
Kings of the seething foam!
Warriors bold, from the norseland cold,
Far o'er the sea we roam,
Lords of the waves we are.

We have left our wives and our sweethearts
fair On the rock encircled strand,
To entreat the gods to watch 'o'er their loves,
And to bring them back to land.

Each day they'll pray to heaven,
Nor will they pray in vain,
For the gods will watch o'er our sturdy bark,
And will guide her home again.

Lords of the waves we are,
Kings of the seething foam!
Warriors bold, from the norseland cold,
Far o'er the sea we roam,
Lords of the waves we are.

To our oars we bend with a right good will,
And all sorrow leave behind;
As the white-wing'd gulls which around us skim,
We are racing, racing with the wind.

And when our foes are vanquish'd,
And we return once more,
Oh, the welcome glad they will greet us with,
As we gain the long'd-for shore,
as we gain the long'd-for shore.

Lords of the waves we are,
Kings of the seething foam!
Warriors bold, from the norseland cold,
Far o'er the sea we roam,
Lords of the waves we are.

A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING:

As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS.

If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless you request another service. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small handling fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

If you are in the San Francisco area, I welcome pick-up in person.

I am very happy to ship records worldwide.

Please use the EBAY shipping cost as a guideline.

As always, I would appreciate any suggestions and corrections from you, pls contact me with any question.

Thank you very much, and enjoy these great records!!!
