Seller: vintagewatchstores (2,738) 100%, Location: London, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 361811465434 A fine and unusual, possibly Staffordshire (maybe Peter hatton) early 18th century turret or long case clock, of very small proportions with 30-hour movement, (ca. 1700-10) with early oblong section pillars, fancy shaped plates and wooden winding barrels. The movement now on anchor escapement, but appears to have originally been on a verge escapement, but covnerted long ago Now with anchor escapement, but originally appears to have been on on verge, the potence hole for the verge to the back plate is clearly visible etc. The clock movement requires a full clean and overhaul, and various repairs and replacements changed. THE MOVEMENT : 90% mint, with a 30-hour strking substantial clock-maker made movement. The clock runs for a full 30-hours between windings and unsually strikes the hours, bell and bell stand are missing. This is a very substantial and unusual movement with four oblong section iron pillars all pinned to front plate. The pillars extend through the movement by another 18 mm, so no dial was ever attached to this movement it seems The clock originally with gut lines and pulleys, both missing attached to the two charming wooden barrels, both complete with click work, but watch our other auctions for suitable parts. The striking train is complete, with fly, right to the top of the train, in the arch of the plate. The brass wheels all in good condition, arbors and pinions in good condition, ready to be used again. The striking work arbors and levers are all present and seemingly in good order. The bell hammer has been removed from the shaft, but easily replaced. The hammer spring and stop are clearly later, crude replacements. The strking work via very early, outside rack attached to the front plate, with nicely hand-cut teeth to the rack. The rack and associated levers is all present, some with solder on, which will need to be removed. There is a pull repeat lever and arbor and scrolled finial to the end on rhs of the movement, which could have had a string or cord attached to it. This allows for remote access to the clock, and activating the strike, which will record the last hour struck. So possibly used in a well off domestic setting, such as a large well to do home, in the early 18th century. The going train with great wheel, 3rd wheel, and later escape wheel and pallets. Appears to be an 18th century conversion from verge to anchor. The witness hole for the verge potence clealry visible on the back plate and possible pivot holes for the front of the verge arbor, to movement front plate. The winding arbors are long, but only reach same point as the end of the hour wheel on the motion work, so the movement could have sat behind a fixed wall dial on a high posiiton on a wall to give adequate drop for the weights. The front plate with a simple bridge to carry the motion work The plates measure 137 mm high by 128 mm wide, and with four pillars between the plates. These extend through the front plate. the front plate. Rear plate location of three of the four pillars showing poor repairs which will need to be removed and correct repair-work carried out. The clock movement weighs 2.2 kilos, hence the shipment costs. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Please note, the magnified electronic images show detail much greater than would be visible with the naked eye.
