A rare brass alidade rule with graduated scales to both beveled sides & with folding sights.
One side is graduated from zero to 12" the other from zero to 10" - all graduations are legible and the engraved numbers look like they could be early 19th Century. In the middle of the rule there are the numbers 24 & 20 which correspond to the inch divisions on both sides. ( the 12" side - each inch has 24 divisions & the 10" side each inch has 20 divisions). No makers name although it appears to be British made.
The sights are ok but there is a little wobble on each hinge & one tilts too far.
Probably used on a surveyor's plane table .
Rare to find one that's early.
George Rowney was mainly a retailer of artists materials and it is unusual to find a protractor bearing his signature. Judging by the numerals and the signature I would estimate it to be around mid to late 19th Century.
