Leonard and Hearns - two members of the 1980s "Four Kings" alongside Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran - first fough eight years prior, for the unified Welterweight World Championship. Leonard had just one loss on his record, an avenged defeat to Duran, whilst the fearsome-punching Hearns was still unbeaten. In what would be awarded the Ring Magazine's "Fight of the Year" for 1981, Leonard won a topsy-turvy encounter via fourteenth round techincal knockout.

Both fighters went on to claim world titles in other weight clasess, and this rematch represented the eigth and penultimate fight between members of the "Four Kings". This time, the fight took place at Super-Middleweight, with Leonard as the WBC champion and Hearns holding the WBO belt. After twelve fiercely-contested rounds, the fight was scored a tight split-decision draw. Hearns scored the only two knockdowns of the fight, and many felt he was cheated of the win; however, there is perhaps a degree of metaphorical correcteness that at least one of the legendary "Four Kings" fights ended level given their equal standing as true greats of the sport.
