Limerick 1803

This is a map of the environs of Limerick in 1803. It was copied from an original plan by a Captain Birch — possibly J. F. Birch who was a Captain in the Royal Engineers at the time — and is scaled at about 300 yards to the inch. Curiously, in a throwback to earlier maps, the top of the illustration is in fact towards the south, with the north towards the bottom. Limerick is one of the six counties which go to form the province of Munster and the town of the same name sits largely on the south bank of the River Shannon; the river forms the boundary between the counties of Limerick and Clare. The town of Limerick was established by the Danes in the 9th century and it marked the point where the River Shannon started to open up into the estuary and was, thus, the last point at which the river was easily crossed by a ford. The date of this map predates the construction of the Sarsfield Bridge (1824-35) across the River Shannon. The map shows well the defensive arrangements for the town as well as the scale of the actual settlement. In the center is King's Island; this is the part of Limerick which is today called English Town. Across the Abbey River, to the south, is that part of Limerick known as Irish Town and beyond that Newtown Perry. It was on the King's Island that King John had his castle built. St Mary's Cathedral is also situated in the heart of English Town. Newtown Pery was an 18th-century development and today forms the commercial center of Limerick.
