FOR WHAT OTHERS ARE LOOKING FOR

Antique and vintage items often make nicer than new gifts ITEM Victorian Stevengraphs, popular-appeal pure silk woven pictures, have become very collectable antiques and this example, featuring "The Good Old Days", featuring a 1774 mail coach, is sought after because it was one of the first pictures to be produced in 1879. Stevengraphs provide terrific evidence of the innovation and entrepreneural flair of the Victorians. Thomas Stevens set up his own weaving business at an early age and perfected the idea of producing multicolour silk-woven images and pictures. His earliest products, from 1862, were bookmarks and within 15 years he had registered some 900 different designs. From 1879 onwards he had extended his range of products to pictures and went on to produce Valentine, Christmas and Birthday cards and badges for schools. "The Good Old Days" sits within the most prolific period of production between 1879 and 1905. The typeface, and the London address provided on the Stevengraph advertisment on the back of the frame, suggests that this particular example was produced 1891 thru 1902. This an excellent example of the ability of this new weaving process to capture remarkably fine detail in almost microscopic form as our images try to show. We love the care and attention paid to the realistic people on board the coach, the horses in full flow and the trees backdrop. Please note that this example of a Stevengraph carries a promotion for "Thomas Stevens, Sole Inventor and Manufacturer at the Stevengraph Works, Coventry" and an illustration of how prolific, buoyant and popular Stevengraphs had become.

CONDITION

Given its age, the Stevengraph is in good condition. Stevengraphs can fade if exposed to too much sunlight. We cannot say that the reds, blues and greens are in the same bright, pristine condition as when they were first produced, but the colours remain quite strong as our images show i.e. the colour red remains red and not pale pink, which usually happens when exposed to too much light over a long life. The period frame is in good condition too.

PRICING

Whenever possible our asking prices are based on either our knowledge of the genre or on what similar pieces have been sold for on the international market, rather than what some sellers are asking, which are usually two very different things!

You will normally find that our prices sit somewhere in the middle between auction and professional dealer prices and the current market.
