Features and Provenance:  From a North American collection

This superb mount of a stylised regardant beast, is considered to have originated from Northern Europe to the Finno-Ugric language region. As great travellers, the Vikings collected items of value and smaller trinkets for trade.  It is known that decorative mounts were recycled as jewellery when the original purpose was over; being traded as an amulet or symbol of achievement.  Viking wanderlust made them great traders; they are often maligned as nothing more than Scandinavian thugs, but nothing could be further from the truth. The range of their trade-goods was extensive. Norsemen never referred to themselves as Vikings as it was an old Norse word meaning 'adventure and trade'. It did however, enter English lexicons in the 18th century, but even then it was only meant to refer to 'a Scandinavian.'

Ebay is a fantastic platform via which to communicate. I am Eric Knowles. I am unquestionably a people person in so far as I like to know the person at the end of the telephone, or those with whom I like to know the seller.

Please do not think me egotistical, however, it is important that people know exactly who I am. I have been involved in the antiques business since 1971. My career took a leap forward when I joined Bonhams in 1976. Some five years later I became head of the Decorative Arts department. The same year I was invited by the BBC to take part in the Antiques Roadshow four decades later I am still enjoying being a part of the team.
