Seller: charlie-farlie (3,067) 100%, Location: Stowmarket, Ships to: GB, Item: 252653375089 Due to my husband’s impending move to hospice accommodation, it is his wish that I continue to overhaul and sell our personal collection of Smiths and other makes of clocks on his behalf, as he has done for many years. Please read my notes at the end of the listing. Ladies and gentlemen, I am offering you a clock that is a change from our normal format. I present for your perusal, a Smiths Bakelite “drop dial” wall timepiece (time only) non-striking and non-chiming clock that was in production from March 1952 until August 1961. I offer you “The Torre” dated to 1955. The length of time that Smiths produced this clock indicates that it was a very popular model. These were available in several colours but this one is finished in a light cream. I overhauled this clock for my husband in March of this year. The drop dial style of wall clock was very popular from the early 19th century and they still attract a lot of interest today. The pendulum can be seen swinging to and fro in the lenticle at the base of the clock. The complete front of the clock is raised in order to wind it and set the time. It has very gentle sweeping lines and a superb styling that makes this a very attractive wall clock. The case is in excellent condition with no chips, scratches or lumps out of the case. The hinge is perfect and has never been repaired and the front is held nicely closed with its original firm clasp. I have given the case a good clean and I have polished it with some polish that was recommended to my husband by a Bakelite dealer. It has not been “tarted up” in any way for the benefit of the camera or in an attempt to portray the clock for something that it very clearly and obviously isn’t; a brand new clock! The length of this fine clock is 10” long, plus 0.5” for the hinge. It is 7.25” at is widest point and 4.5” across the drop. It protrudes just 3” from the wall. The movement is the popular H1O time only movement that is the thinner version of the H1A which is much deeper. It is dated to March 1955. Using my BHI training and under my husband’s VERY watchful eyes, I stripped the movement down (please see the pictures) and ultrasonically cleaned it using the very best fluids to obtain the very best results. I inspected the movement for wear and found none whatsoever, which indicates to me that this clock has seen very little use. No previous bush replacement has ever been undertaken and none will be required for many years to come. I have replaced the mainspring using a pattern stainless steel replacement. I then meticulously polished the bushes and pivots, using the traditional methods taught to me by the BHI and my husband. Once I had completed this work, I reassembled, aligned, tested and lubricated the movement. My husband always insists on using the very highest quality and finest grades of horological oils and I am using these same oils in my overhauls. This intensive treatment should provide the new owner with accuracy and reliability for many years to come. Since I completed this overhaul in March of this year, the clock has run without fault, keeping superb time. The detailing of the dial was finished in a choice of blue, red or green. This one is the latter. The dial is finished in grey and has a few marks that are totally commensurate with its age. I chose not to attempt a cleaning programme with the dial as this could remove the minute track and spoil its appearance. Around the outside of the dial, raised Arabic numerals adorn the circumference of the glass. These are also finished in green although they are a little faded. I felt it better to leave these as they are, as re-painting these would destroy the originality of the clock. This fine clock will be supplied with its original pendulum, key and a comprehensive set of instructions. I will also include a set of timepiece instructions for Smiths clocks. Two screws will be needed to secure this clock to the wall. This is a fine clock that will look fabulous in any kitchen or other setting where a wall clock would be more suitable. It has a very soothing tick and will soon become a welcome addition to any home. This clock does not strike and it does not chime. It does, however, tell the time and it does so beautifully. Notes Until I have fully completed my BHI training as an horologist, some, but not all of the clocks that we will be listing from now on will have been overhauled on our behalf by a superb, highly skilled and fully trained horologist who, like us, is a member of the British Horological Institute (BHI). She is a friend and was also trained in using traditional methods, and comes from a long line of horologists. The remainder of the clocks will have been overhauled and photographed, either by myself or by my husband when he was well enough to do them. We believe we are the first clock restorers on eBay UK to offer a full twelve month written warranty on all fully overhauled clocks, with a free 24 hour courier service for our valued customers. All of our clocks leave here in perfect working order unless otherwise stated. The clock will be securely packed for despatch by 24 hour courier FREE OF CHARGE within one day of receiving payment. Collection in person is, of course, welcome if you are local enough with a payment in cash if you so wish. A tracking number is always provided. Please note that I book my courier through Interparcel. They require a phone number BEFORE I can make the booking. I would therefore be very grateful if you could provide this when completing checkout. Please note that it is not always possible for our couriers to provide a next day delivery to customers in Scotland, Northern Ireland or outside the mainland UK. Most of the clocks that I offer for sale are a minimum of 50 years old and by their very nature will have the odd minor marks here and there that would be totally commensurate with their age. I will always point out anything untoward and while I always provide several photographs in the description, I am always happy to provide more images should you require them. I can always be contacted by e-mail, phone or Skype should you encounter any problems either with the setting up or at any time in the future. I will always be delighted to assist you in any way I possibly can. So please bid with total confidence and you can rest assured of the very best in after care service should you ever need it. My Husband has written four useful guides for both bidders and sellers on eBay, covering a range of subjects. These can be easily accessed by clicking onto the charlie-farlie user id and scrolling down to the bottom of the page. I hope that you find them informative, useful and interesting. Here is a little note on bush polishing that I am including. An eBay user read somewhere on eBay that bushes can be over-polished, resulting in the need for re-bushing the entire movement. This can happen if you polish a bush with a polishing broach. We DON'T!! We use an ultra-fine specialised compound and pegwood that removes nothing more than the decades of tarnish. This is a traditional method that is still taught to this day. No brass is removed from the bush and the size of the hole is NOT increased. I hope this clears up any issues and will put people's mind at ease. This listing is open to UK buyers only. Sorry, there are no exceptions to this!! Will all bidders with a feedback score of ten or less please contact me with a landline phone number BEFORE placing a bid, or your bid WILL be removed!! Thank you. If you have any questions, please ask AT LEAST 18 hours before the listing ends!!! Powered by eBay Turbo Lister Condition: I have for sale a superb Smiths 8 day timepiece wall clock, finished in white Bakelite. It has undergone a full overhaul and has been fitted with a new mainspring. Please read on......................
