1973 Triumph Spitfire MK IV race/sprint/hill climb car

This car was developed and widely campaigned as a hill climb and sprint car in the 1990s. It was sold to the present owner a few years ago in need of total restoration. Under the previous ownership the MK IV 1300 engine was rebuilt, lightened and balanced and fitted with a stage 3 cylinder head, sprint camshaft, twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors, baffled sump, oil cooler and alloy rocker cover. The rebuild increased the power output to about 97 HP on the rolling road (print outs available).

At the same time the car was also fitted with a twin sports exhaust system with stainless steel silencers, Safety devices roll bar, updated 1" thick front anti-roll bar, updated 330lb front springs, decambered rear leaf spring, solid steering rack mounts, Mountney leather sports steering wheel and boss, baffled aluminium fuel tank, Corbeau race seat, rev limiter, electronic ignition, oil pressure gauge, performance distributor, Renault 5 radiator, Kenlowe fan, electric fuel pump, rear firewall, fuel pressure regulator, fibreglass GT6 bonnet, fibreglass front valances and a very rare (believed to be a Williams and Pritchard) fibreglass fastback hard top.

Since purchasing the car the current owner has spent thousands of pounds on further improvements and upgrades to prepare the car for circuit racing (it was hoped that car would compete in the CSCC 'Swinging Sixties' race series).

CHASSIS & SUSPENSION

The original chassis was replaced with a fully restored example which was powder coated. Refurbished half shafts, front and rear Spax adjustable shock absorbers and custom made rose-jointed anti roll bar drop links were fitted. Adjustable rear radius arms were also fabricated and the wishbones were powder coated. Polybushes were fitted almost everywhere.

BRAKES

The brake and clutch master cylinders were refurbished with new seals and the original type 14 calipers rebuilt with new pistons and seals before superb Mintex 1144 brake pads were fitted. New copper brake lines were also installed.

ENGINE & GEARBOX

The engine was fitted with a Triumphtune lightened fly wheel which was balanced with a new clutch before a lightweight aluminium gearbox bell housing was fitted. A foam performance air filter box was fitted to the engine which also had a new head gasket and cylinder head oil feed kit fitted. New fuel lines were also installed.

ELECTRICS

All wiring was replaced with a custom-made wiring loom, designed by an electrical engineer, incorporating a new 8-blade fuse box. The windscreen wipers were converted to a single blade using a larger gear within the motor. A custom made carbon fibre dashboard, using material obtained from the Mercedes F1 team, was made and new ignition, fuel pump and starter switches were fitted. The battery was also relocated to the boot to aid weight distribution.

WHEELS

The original Cobra Supaslot alloy wheels were refurbished with a powder coated custom paint scheme and fitted with 60 profile Yokohama Advan A048R tyres.

BODY

The doors have been stripped, fibreglass rear wings have been fitted and the bonnet hinge boxes removed to create a smooth front end. The car has been completely resprayed in its original mimosa yellow a few years ago and is still in a very presentable condition having been garaged since the rebuild. The paintwork is not perfect but this is a race car, designed and built to be driven in anger, and is not a museum showpiece. The car currently has no window glass but included in the sale is a pair of polycarbonate sheets to make them if required. The car has been fully wax oiled.

The current owner has made further modifications for compliance with the MSA 'blue book' including the fitment of a laminated front windscreen, one-way fuel, plumbed-in 2.25 litre fire extinguisher (service now required), FIA specification electric cut-out switch with remote pull handles, TRS race harness (expiry date now passed), tow loops front and rear, and an LED rear light. This was a few years ago and regulations will have changed so further compliance work will be needed.

The V5 is present and although the car is not currently road legal it could be returned to the road with relative ease. The car comes with its original registration and number plates.

For competitive use there are a couple of small areas to complete, including sealing the gaps in the front and rear fire walls.

The owner is extremely reluctant to sell the vehicle but due to a change of circumstances it is now available for sale for sprint, hillclimb, circuit racing or track day use.
