With eight square grids carved into the wood for each child to assist their counting and holes for their inkwells, this bench/desk is in excellent condition and is a real delight. Measuring 183cm in length, 66cm in width and 52cm in height, this school bench/desk was made by the North of England School Furnishing Company Limited in Darlington which provided many schools with furniture after the Education Act of 1870 which introduced the state schooling system. The Company was extremely successful, the only blight on its history being the "Darlington Disaster" of 1889 when the company building caught fire and as a crowd gathered to watch the spectacle, a wall collapsed upon them, killing 5 people and wounding many more. Even with this terrible accident in its history, the company rebuilt and continued to thrive until 1981 when the company was taken over. History lesson over! Collection only please.
