Seller: twicm (660) 100%, Location: Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Ships to: GB, Item: 291956836641 Fantastic and Very Rare Late 16th Early 17th Century Wrought Iron Hand Made Strong Box with6 Sliding Bolts or Latches, false front escutcheon, anti tamper lever and secret opening top escutcheon cover. Probably German Nuremberg. Circa 1630 Weighing approx 12kg This Chest is very rare because of its size and even more so because of its unusual lock configuration. German or Nuremberg (Nurnberg) strong boxes with false front escutcheons and hidden locks on the underside of the lid are rare enough, but what makes this one stand out, certainly for the keen collector is the unusual moving bolts on the hinged side of the lid. Normally the bolts on the hinged edge are fixed solid ones not connected directly with the main lock and simply tuck in under the lip of the box when in the closed position. This means that even if the hinges are attacked, the lid resists being prized open as equally as the remaining sides. So to find one of these boxes with bolts that all move is a pretty rare thing. There is also another feature that rarely appears on these boxes and that is the anti-tamper lever that you can see just to the underside of the lock barrel in the centre of the lock. This prevents a different but nearly similar key from being used and stops the centre master slider from moving if an incorrect key does manage to get past the first stage of the main lock. There is one more thing that makes this particular one rare too and that is the top and side handles. Normally there would be either just side handles or just a top handle, not both. Armada Chests are usually much bigger and strong boxes normally a lot smaller, so to find one of the middling size is also a rare find. This is a very nice example of handmade brute force workmanship.
