I got this violin from a 70 year old woman in 2008, who told me it was her grandmother’s! I did some math, and I estimate the age of this instrument at around 100 years old! It’s made in Germany , (that’s pre-war Germany , not post war. Actually, quite possibly pre-WWI Germany ), and inside, it says, “Caspar da Salo in Brescia ”. Under that, 1555, and a small label that says Made in Germany . Of course, it’s a copy of a famous violin, like the thousands of Stradivari copies out there. Gasparo da Sala, while not as well known as Stradavari, was arguably even more important in the development of the violin! Gasparo Bertolotti, his given name, was an accomplished “violin master” of 16th century Italy . He was born into an extremely distinguished musical family, who played at the courts of kings and even for the Pope! Gasparo, and one or two others, can be credited with developing the modern day violin, roughly 400 years ago! His instruments were studied by, and influenced, Stradavari, who lived 100 years later! So of course, he's widely copied.

The violin looks like it’s in its original case, with the original bow. I couldn’t swear to that, but if not original, definitely old and period correct. Knowing the violin’s history, I feel okay calling the case and bow original, although it is possible that this is not literally true. I just am not enough of a violin guy to say for sure.

The instrument has a couple of scratches on the back, and a couple of smaller ones on the front (see pics), but other than that, it appears to be in excellent condition. There is a seam split on the back that has not separated very much and should be a quick and easy fix.

The violin sounds very nice, as you would expect from a hundred year old instrument. There’s some beautiful abalone or mother of pearl inlay in the tailpiece.

The case has the usual wear and tear that you would expect from such an old case. One of it’s “legs” is missing (there were 4 balls on the underside, that the case rested on when open), and one of the clasps is missing the moving part. The case works, as is, but I would get the clasps fixed. (The second one is not real tight). There’s a shoulder rest in the case, and I’ll leave it there for the buyer.

I am not a violin expert. I know very little about them. I’ve tried to be as clear as I could in my description, but look at my pictures, and ask questions, if you have any. I strive for 100% customer satisfaction.

This violin was appraised by Ed Curtz of Curtz Violins in Kingston , New York for $2000. From what I’ve been told, a real Gasparo da Salo violin would cost between $500,000 and $1M!
