A working Smiths Selectric MANTELCLOCK.

Attention

This is an electric clock and it relies on mains frequency (50Hz) to keep time. It is not self starting. You have to push in a knob to start it.Once started it will keep accurate time.

  Description

Here we have a 40’s vintage, Smiths mantel clock in good working condition. It has been inspected and serviced, see details below. It’s a mains electric clock, the origonal cable has been replaced with a 3 meter white lead and 13 amp plug to BS 1363. It has been recently PAT tested.

The  movement was manufactured by Smiths, the case is very good condition with a few age-related blemishes. There are a couple on minor blemishes where the bezel meets the case. It has a good finish and no missing veneer pieces.

The case has not been polished for this presentation.  No case restoration work has been attempted, in preference of maintaining the patina naturally gained from many years of care. (Please see the pictures).

The rear door has a clasp and closes as it should. The front bezel is polished Chrome. The glass is clean & scratch free. The bezel & glass assembly has no ‘drop’ on opening and has a reassuring click on closing to the clasp. It has a large, easy to read, 7-inch face, which is described with 12 roman numerals on an aluminium rectangular chapter ring. The face is clean and clear.

The clock has is almost silent. There are no chimes.

The clock has no battery back-up, so if the mains is interupted, it needs to be re-started. This may take several pushes to get it going.

Approximate size is; 11.5" Wide   8.5"High   4.5" Deep.

Overhaul & Lubrication

The movement was extracted from the case.

Inspection shows the clock has been well looked after. It exhibits negligible wear and no new pivot bushings needed to be fitted. The pivots have been lightly oiled with fine clock oil.

The clock will not need to be serviced again for many years and will continue to keep good time.

The case has not been polished. No case restoration work has been undertaken.
