Marquiss of Lothian 1780, Original Mezzotint, J Dixon After Gilpin and Cosway.
Dramatic and martial of the 5th Marquiss of Lothian, in a Hussar uniform mounted with sabre dangling from his wrist. Painted by Richard Cosway and Sawrey Gilpin in 1776 and engraved in mezzotint by John Dixon. This example printed and published by R Sayer and J Bennett in 1780. Extremely good rich dark impression sadly trimmed and with false plate lines attached probably nineteenth century, some staining lower middle from old mount line. An impression of this print is in The National Army Museum untrimmed albeit a lesser impression showing one and a half soldiers to the left and more landscape to the right and also the artist’s and engraver’s details. Old copper plate ink collector’s number on reverse, also the pencil inscription no. 6.

Imposing militaristic picture of a dashing Hussar commander on a rather beautiful horse with his arm in one of the classic cavalry sabre positions, probably prior to the charge.
Some age and time staining of no great consequence. Presented in a fresh bespoke slate blue grey hinged conservation book mount. Print attached with water soluble archival standard Japanese mulberry paper hinging tape. Outside size of mount measures 14.125 x 18.25 inches
