This is a lot of three books about British and Australian POWs in Japanese camps in WW2. They are :

  1. Life and death in Changi, by Brian Kitching, self published, 1998, paperback, 280 pages. This is the diary of Tom Kitching, the author’s father, who was Chief Surveyor in Singapore and interned by the Japanese. The diary was kept secretly, and tells a fascinating and poignant story of the life of civilians in Changi Gaol from late 1941 until his death there on 14 April 1944. The book is in good clean condition apart from a small stain on the cover and a rust mark from a paper clip on two early pages. It includes a short letter from Brian Kitching to the original buyer of the book, in which he notes he produced 500 copies of this initial self-published edition – I believe it was later published commercially as well.

  2. Changi photographer – George Aspinall’s record of captivity, by Tim Bowden, Times Editions, Singapore, 1997, paperback, 144 pages, many black & white photos. Aspinall was an Australian soldier captured by the Japanese at Singapore, and held there and in Thailand, where he also worked on the Burma Railway. He took many photographs in secret in both Singapore and Thailand, many of which are shown in this book, alongside descriptions of his experiences. The book is in good clean condition with some shelf wear.

  3. A bar of shadow, by Laurens van der Post, Hogarth, London, 1954, hardback, dustjacket, 59 pages. This is a novel by this famous 20 th century author (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurens_van_der_Post ), based on his experiences as a POW of the Japanese in Indonesia in WW2. It tells the story of Hara, a Japanese sergeant in charge of a camp, and his relationship with a British officer, presumably based on Post himself. The book is in fair condition with some shelf wear, fading on the endpapers, and some loss to the dustjacket.

This is a good lot for anyone interested in the Far East POWs.
