Satirical print, A Political Reflection (London, Published by S. Gans, Strand, 1828?).  George IV is the baby rocked by Lady Conyngham while the Duke of Wellington places the crown on his own head. Single sheet, 27 x 37 cms.  Contemporary pirate version of William Heath's original satirical print. William Heath's satirical prints were so popular that they were frequently pirated, notably by S. Gans a rival publisher to Heath's original publisher Thomas Mclean. The main differences between this pirate copy and the original seem to be in the reflected face of the Duke of Wellington and the figure of Paul Pry in the lower left corner which was Heath's signature until in 1829, because of the ease of piracy, he changed it to his actual signature. The colouring is also paler and inferior, with the original purple of the robes, cushion and chair here being blue and the carpet here simply given a blue wash.
  • Condition: Browned on back and edges due to old mount (now absent). One inch-long closed tear to edge.
  • Original/ Repro: Original
