Mappe - Monde

(Map of the World- World Map in Double Hemispheres)

Issued Paris, c.1834 by A.M. Perrot. Engraved by Pierre Tardieu.

In the bottom cusp is engraved the almost remarkable simple note that active volcanoes are to be identified on the map by tiny red dots- indeed, dozens of these can be seen in numerous locations across the map! A very early example of thematic mapping relating to world geology and then known volcanoes in particular. The interior of Africa displays a bizarre & unique line from the mythical Mts. of the Moon then connecting to a range which extends down to South Africa.

Uncommon and charming little mid-19th century antique map. Almost primitive looking, engraved with original inexpert outline hand color utterly unique to the era and method of hand production.

Noteworthy for the scarcity factor, from a pocket sized atlas which had a small circulation and is therefore rarely encountered as a loose map today.

Sheet displays small minor signs of age, some light diagonal creasing to sheet across right side, soft light old traces of creasing in spots, light evidence of some handling, couple small age spots, printed slightly askew on the sheet and issued thus, but overall still clean and well preserved.

A scarce little antique map with fine patina and historical cartographic appeal.

Sheet measures c. 10 1/2" W x 7" H.

Printed area measures c. 7 1/4" W x 5 1/2" H.

Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, vol. 3, p. 407 and vol. 4, p. 247.
