SUMMARY:

Two rare works, with USTC listing only three copies of the first and one of the second work. The first work is the first Badius edition of this version of the text and the second is the fourth Badius edition.

His only known work, the Attic Nights (Latin : Noctes Atticae ), takes its name from having been begun during the long nights of a winter which he spent in Attica . He afterwards continued it in Rome. It is compiled out of an Adversaria , or commonplace book, in which he had jotted down everything of unusual interest that he heard in conversation or read in books, and it comprises notes on grammar , geometry , philosophy , history and many other subjects. One story is the fable of Androcles , which is often included in compilations of Aesop 's fables, but was not originally from that source.

The work, deliberately devoid of sequence or arrangement, divided into 20 Books. All these have come down to us except the eighth, of which nothing remains but the index. The Attic Nights are valuable for the insight they afford into the nature of the society and pursuits of those times, and for its many excerpts from works of lost ancient authors.

In his Elegantiae linguae Latinae, an advanced handbook of Latin language and style, he gave the humanist program some of its most trenchant and combative formulations, bringing the study of Latin to an unprecedented level. He made numerous contributions to classical scholarship. But he also used his vast knowledge of the classical languages and their literatures as a tool to criticize a wide range of ideas, theories, and established practices.

Elegantiae linguae Latinae, a manual for the correct use of Latin syntax and vocabulary, which became a bestseller throughout Europe.

BACKGROUND:

Aulus Gellius (c. 125 – after 180 AD) was a Latin author and grammarian, who was probably born and certainly brought up in Rome . He was educated in Athens , after which he returned to Rome, where he held a judicial office. He is famous for his Attic Nights , a commonplace book , or compilation of notes on grammar , philosophy , history , antiquarianism , and other subjects, preserving fragments of the works of many authors who might otherwise be unknown today.  The precise date of his birth, as of his death, is unknown; but from the names of his teachers and companions, he must have lived under Hadrian , Antoninus Pius , and Marcus Aurelius .

Lorenzo (or Laurentius ) Valla (c.1407 – 1 August 1457) was an Italian humanist , rhetorician , educator and Catholic priest. He is best known for his textual analysis that proved that the Donation of Constantine was a forgery.

CONDITION:

Condition is Good/Very Good.  Wear to boards, signature to lower first title page, Guillemon, small clipping/written notes to inner front board, some old written notes to side margins, few marginal blemishes here and there, last page a bit tattered/hole tear/missing a few words, some damp staining towards the end, loss of some of back inner board paper, for age most pages are very good, clasps work great, hinges/text block are very good for 500/510 years old!!!
