Seller: regiomontanus (2,985) 100%, Location: Indianapolis, Indiana, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 251777444033 Partie Orientale de la Terre Ferme ou l'on trouve la Guiane 23 cm x 17 copperplate engraving, 27 cm x 20 cm sheet size, contemporary hand colour, Paris, 1749 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of the lower course and outlets of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers compiled by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) who with his son Didier (1723-1786) dominated 18th century French cartography, applying their famous motto of bel et utile to create a distinctive "modern" style of mapmaking. The map (Pedley #489) is representative of the clear and well composed, orderly style Vaugondy championed and covers a region that includes part of what is now Venezeula, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, northern Brazil and eastern Peru. A notation shows the discovery by the Portuguese in 1743 of the Casiquiare Canal linking the Orinoco and Amazon river systems by means of the Rio Negro. Vaugondy has banished Sir Walter Raleigh's mythical Lake Parime that appeared on many if not most 17th century maps of the region but still includes a conjectural Lake Cassipa which he shows feeding the Orinoco via four major rivers. The Amazon is dotted with small forts and settlements, extending as far as Pevas in Peru which was founded in 1735 by the Jesuit Adan Viedman making it the oldest settlement on the Peruvian Amazon. A fascinating snapshot of European knowledge (or the lack thereof) of the region in the middle of the 18th century, this example of the map is quite well preserved and will make an important addition to any collection related to the Amazon and Orinoco region. Condition - Please note carefully: This 266-year-old map is in overall good condition as can be ascertained by photo, strong impression with distinct platemark on top quality laid paper with prominent watermark, outline colour remains bright and vivid, no folds, no text on verso.
