The book itself was first published in 1774, the year of Goldsmith's death, and has been published in various formats with and without colored plates and in a variety of volumes since that time. The bindings are black leather and heavy cloth boards. The spines are attractively gold stamped and the cloth boards are stained and spotted. The corners are rubbed with some loss of leather on the outer corners. The bindings are tight and the contents sound. Both of these volumes are inscribed "Samuel Pearse, Exeter" (England). Aside from the 36 single-sided hand-colored plates, there are numerous uncolored engravings in black and white for an additional 35 single-sided plates (with one fold-out) covering every animal group, including MAMMALS, BIRDS, REPTILES, AMPHIBIANS, FISH, INVERTEBRATES including BEETLES, BUTTERFLIES and OTHER INSECTS and ARTHROPODS, and the races of Man and some fascinating figures of geological curiosities. The image area of the hand-colored plates are generally clean with a few that have some foxing spots within the lined border. Many, however, do have areas of significant foxing in the margin area. The colors are all nice and fresh. The uncolored engraved plates have scattered foxing and browning spots with a few sheets having browned considerably. There is also a fold-out map of the comparative heights of the world's mountains and another map of Geological Europe. Volume I of this two volume set consists of 564 pages of text and volume II has 663 pages, including the index. There are also engravings within the text area as well. Volume I includes a comprehensive introduction and a general index of each and every illustration which, as is stated on the title page, this book is "illustrated by upwards of two thousand figures". Each book is about 6 X 10 inches x 2 inches thick, and includes a portrait (Oliver Goldsmith in Vol. I and Baron Cuvier in Vol. II) and a hand-colored vignette frontispiece.
