HARDBACK MAPS are identical visually to a regular paper or photographic image, but enhanced with an extra-rigid backing meant to provide stability and protection. In short, the image is mounted onto a substance for ultimate protection against warping and damaged corners.
Clonoe 1822
The survey from which this map of Mountjoy Manor in the Barony of Dungannon, County Tyrone, was taken was by order of the Commissioners for inquiring into the Crown Lands in Ireland. The title is placed below a crown, below which is a wash drawing illustrating a lough with mountains, trees, a cottage, and boatmen. The scale of the map is 16 perches to one inch. Lord Mountjoy — Charles Blount (1563-1606) succeeded as eighth Lord Mountjoy in 1594 — was the Governor of Ireland appointed in 1600 under whose control the rebel-lion in Ulster was finally quashed culminating in the defeat of the rebels and their Spanish supporters at Kinsale. In order to maintain authority, he constructed a number of forts — including Mountjoy on the shores of Lough Neagh and Charlemont — to house garrisons.
