This is a vintage (serial number 324983) Holton H-77 "Farkas" Double French Horn. This instrument was the original model of horn developed and designed by Philip Farkas, is in very good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. The Holton model 77 was built using yellow brass, and later the design was altered to make the horn a bit bigger and the material was changed to nickel silver to make the horn a more direct competitor to the Conn 8D; this new model was the Holton 179.  As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings throughout as well as areas of isolated pitting, scratching, and etching. There is one patch on the main tuning slide. The bell engraving is faint, but it still reads: “FRANK HOLTON CO./ 77/ ELKHORN, WIS./ U.S.A.” The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition How the horn plays:
  • The horn plays with a full, warm and rich quality with a colorful, smooth tone. The horn is well-balanced and could be played in either an orchestral or a smaller chamber setting. All registers speak well and with a full dynamic range. The low register plays with security and weight behind the notes, and the high register locks in with accuracy. The Bb and F side intonation match well with the Bb side timbre being very slightly brighter than the F side timbre.

All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop 710 N. Curry St.  Carson City, NV 89703 Unfortunately it is against Ebay's policies for us to include contact information in our listings, but if you have any questions at all about one of our horns please feel free to send a message. Thank you!
