Please note: I have added 54 photos to the end of this listing to try and show the item in as much detail as possible so please take the time to view them all carefully. This is a tremendous quality 19th Century Military Officers Campaign Set. This is the sort of item they would take on their military excursions  so it was a home from home experience for them. This box is really fabulous even though there are items missing and there are other original items in it damaged its nice to see it like this. It has not been altered or restored along the way and the serious collector or museum curator can try and fill it again with better period items or just leave it alone like I have done.  The box itself is made of a hard wood, probably mahogany or similar in a long rectangular shape with slightly rounded ends. A full brass hinge at the back and a full circular brass end with the MOCK key hole in it.  You can see the quality of the work with the flush brass rivets that hold the brass plate in position. The very top has a shield shaped cartouche which has two initials  engraved on it:  AO in old font. The box lid is very clever - it has the small amount of SIDE movement on the hinge which allows you to move the lid slightly to the "right" as you look at the box face on. This moves the little brass catch on the underside of the lid across and then the lid can now hinge up. The lid does stay open on the hinge on its own but I would recommend  you just make sure something is behind the lid as its fairly heavy as it's about a THIRD of the width of the box. You see under the lid the brass CATCH that you moved slightly to open the box. You also see a genuine period MIRROR. It is a little bit loose and blackened. It is framed in a darker wood and the bottom and top pieces are missing from the surround. It is inset into mahogany - teak wood with a small finger hole at the top as well as a small brass slide catch. Simply move this over with your finger and pull the HOLE the mirror sheet of wood comes out now and there are two different sized combs behind. There is a lighter boxwood like wood NIT COMB which is period to the campaign set as it fits into the inset just right. The fine wood nit comb does have some fine teeth broken off at one corner.  The inset is on top of a razor STROP inset. The strop is NOT in the box. On the very top is a period HORN comb it too has a tooth broken. There is a small block of light coloured wood where its teeth fit under. All two items fit snug in here. I would think the mirror could be put back in upside down as not to damage the mirror. Looking now at the bottom inset you will see two CUT THROAT RAZORS both are slightly different but are period and original to the case as they have different end cut outs on the wood inset.  One of the razors has a square end which has nickel like metal frame. The handle is cream and period but as you can see it is damaged slightly. It is cracked at both sides at the fold out blade hinge. The razor has been used and has some pieces missing. I also has some rust staining. It has no makers name on the polished steel. There are scratch graffiti marks on both sides of this handle but I'm not sure what it says but both words begin with B. The other razor has a normal rounded end and has not got a metal frame. This razor has period handles and one side is cracked with a chunk missing. It also has polished steel with staining and the very tip has two small bits missing from the blade This one does have a maker's name: JOHN BARBER with MASONIC device below with PATENT TEMPERED STEEL on the other side. John Barber was from Sheffield and was in business from 1823 - 1870 a very good razor maker. The handles of this razor also have scratched on graffiti wording also with B start... but I cannot read it. You can also see this tray should have a pair of SCISSORS below the two razors but the scissors are missingSo now LIFT OUT this inset tray to see the underside of it... there is a small cut-out part which allows for a small HANDLE which is missing from a small thin compartment at the bottom left hand side.   At the top there is a circular lidded PEWTER SOAP DISH complete with its threaded lid.  Then you see two insets with 2 different BRUSHES in. To the right hand side in a proper shaped inset is a cow horn  used TOOTH BRUSH. The bristles LOOK worn down in the middle but they are not as you can see the shape of the inset that the brush was made like this. It's got a few bristles missing in the centre. The second brush in the centre has a different period handle all carved sheep bone with proper bristles. It has a curved back but again its been made like this - see the inset.  This is probably a moustache  brush as I have seen other smaller brushes this shape in the past. See also the diamond  shaped handle end and it comes to a point this could be the period but then again you could use this as a TOOTHPICK.  The box is not without issues and items missing and other slightly broken but I do think you will really like this example if you are into such items.  The box measures approx. 8 and 1/2 inches long x 2 and 1/2 inches wide x 2 and 3/8 inches deep. It all weighs approx. 500 grams.       To see ALL my other items for sale please click on the red or blue DOOR icon near my feedback score or click on VISIT SHOP wording on each listing.
