Pinpointing Ovulation is Key in Achieving Pregnancy!

Ovulation Tests - or Ovulation Predictor Kits - allow you to predict, with great accuracy, your most fertile time of the month. Easy to use, OPKs can greatly increase your chances of becoming pregnant - if you use them correctly. Let our very comprehensive Ovulation Test FAQ below help you enhance predictive success!

If used correctly, ovulation tests are excellent predictors of ovulation. However, in order to detect the LH surge with accuracy, directions must be followed exactly. To get the most out of ovulation testing, read our Ovulation Test FAQ.

What comes with the test? The cost of the kit includes everything you need to complete the test. Simple and easy to use, supplied with easy to understand instructions. How do ovulation tests work? Ovulation tests detect luteinizing hormone (LH). Just prior to ovulation, women experience a brief surge in luteinizing hormone. Ovulation predictor kits help you pinpoint this surge and anticipate ovulation - your most fertile period in your cycle. Luteinizing hormone, in elevated amounts, is actually the hormone that causes you to ovulate (when the eggs bursts from the ovarian follicle), so that is why LH tests are so effective in anticipating your most fertile time.

When should I do the test? The best time to test is 2 p.m., or as close as possible. Anytime between noon and 8 p.m. is fine, first morning urine is not recommended. The reason for this is that most women experience a surge in the morning, but it can take 4 hours for it to show up in your urine. Make sure to test at about the same time every day.     How does the test work? This is urine based test kit to measure Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in your urine. This helps detect the LH surge that happens in the middle of your menstrual cycle, about 1-1½ days before ovulation. Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is a hormone produced by your pituitary gland. Your body always makes a small amount of LH, but just before you ovulate, you make much more LH. This test can detect this LH surge, which usually happens 24-26 hours before you ovulate. The test is performed as below however much more detailed & easy to understand instructions are provided with the kit.

  1. Take a urine sample.
  2. Immerse the strip into the urine sample with the arrow end pointing towards the urine for at least 10 seconds. Do not immerse past the MAX (Marker Line). Place test strip on a non-absorbent surface and time 5 minutes.
  3. At 5 minutes read the result.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS - The diagram above shows the possible results. Negative - This indicates that no LH surge has been detected and you should continue daily testing. Positive - Two Distinct colour bands appear on the control and test regions. This means you will probably Ovulate in the next 24-26 hours and this is the best time to try and conceive. Invalid - Control Line fails to appear.   Insufficient specimen volume or incorrect procedure are the most likely cause.  Review instructions and repeat with a new test strip.

Detailed explanation of your LH surge

When do I start testing? Prior to administering an ovulation test it is necessary to determine the length of your menstrual cycle. This is the number of days from the first day of menstrual bleeding to the day before the next bleeding starts again. Refer to the following chart below to determine when you should start testing. The first day of bleeding is day 1. Perform testing 6 days in a row or until the LH surge (darkest test line) has been detected.

My cycle is: Start testing on:
21 days day 5
22 days day 6
23 days day 7
24 days day 8
25 days day 9
26 days day 10
27 days day 11
28 days day 12
29 days day 13
30 days day 14
31 days day 15
32 days day 16
33 days day 17
34 days day 18
35 days day 19
36 days day 20
37 days day 21
38 days day 22
39 days day 23
40 days day 24

Don’t women ovulate on the 14th day after their period starts? Unfortunately this is a myth that many still hold on to, including healthcare professionals. The day of ovulation differs from woman to woman and can even be different from month to month. The “14th day” thinking appears to come from either taking the average of when all women ovulate or from someone just dividing the 28 day cycle in half. However this myth got started, it is not an accurate way to calculate ovulation, because many women do NOT ovulate on the 14th day of their cycle.

During my ovulation time, how many days am I really fertile? During the time of ovulation, an egg is available to be fertilized for only about 12-24 hours. But since sperm can live in the body for 3-5 days and then the egg is available for one day, your most fertile time is considered to be about 5-7 days. How do I interpret results? The same as pregnancy tests? Ovulation tests function differently than hCG pregnancy tests. A positive result (indicating an LH Surge) is indicated by a test band that is of equal or greater intensity (equal or darker) than the control band. A negative result for the LH Surge is indicated when the test band is of lesser intensity (lighter) than the control band or cannot be seen. See diagrams of test results above. What is the best time of day to take the ovulation test? Unlike pregnancy tests, morning (first morning urine) is not the best time to collect samples for ovulation tests, as LH is synthesized in your body early in the morning and will not appear in your urine until the afternoon. The ideal time to test is in the afternoon, around 2pm, though testing may safely take place from 10am to early evening. Should I take the test the same time every day? Yes, be sure to test at the same time each day. Also, reduce your liquid intake around 2 hours before testing as a diluted liquid sample can prevent or hinder LH detection.  When should I beginning testing with the ovulation predictor kit? To determine when to start testing, you must first determine the length of your menstrual cycle. The length of the menstrual cycle is the number of days from the first day of menstrual bleeding to the day before bleeding begins on the next period. Determine the usual length of the menstrual cycle over the last few months. Then, refer to the Cycle Chart to determine on which day of the menstrual cycle to begin testing. How long after my LH surge will ovulation take place? Generally, ovulation will take place 12-48 hours after the LH surge is first detected (using afternoon urine samples), though 36 hours is considered to be the average length of time following the LH surge. When I get a positive on an ovulation test, when is the best time to have intercourse? To increase the chance of conception, it is best to have intercourse the day of the LH surge as well as following three days after. Does the appearance of faint 'test band' indicate an LH surge? A faint line (or a faint positive test band) does not indicate a positive result for an LH surge. While the presence of a faint line on a pregnancy test may indicate a positive result, a faint line on an OPK is always negative. Does taking my basal body temperature tell me the same thing as an OPK? Basal Body Temperature only tells of your LH surge after it is over. That is why the BBT method cannot predict the LH surge. Ovulation tests will tell you - with pinpoint accuracy - when your chances for conception are greatest. Can OPKs be used as contraception devices? Ovulation tests are designed to help facilitate pregnancy. They are not recommended for contraception. Can clomid interfere with test results or cause false positives? Clomid may cause false positives if you test for ovulation too early in your cycle. Please consult with your doctor about how to use OPK's in conjunction with Clomid - or other fertility and prescription drugs. Does a light test line and a dark control line indicate a positive result? Ovulation tests are unlike pregnancy tests - especially when it comes to interpreting results. The results are only positive if the test line is equal to or darker than the control line. I had a positive result yesterday and today. Does that mean there is something wrong? Such results may indicate that your the tests detected the LH Surge on the way up and again on the way down. What if I experience a BBT thermal shift but the ovulation tests failed to detect my LH Surge? It is possible to miss the surge. I f you have a test line that is fairly dark one day then very light the next, you may have missed the actual surge. If your thermal shift occurs, you probably ovulated. It may be a good idea to test twice a day when you feel that you are close to ovulating. Another possibility is that you didn't hold your urine long enough (resulting in a diluted sample).

I have PCOS. Can I still use OPKs? It depends on whether one of your PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) symptoms is elevated LH. You can get some false positives or misleading results. A PCOS patient may have more success tracking ovulation via ultrasound. The only way to know if it is reliable for you is to try it. I had a positive LH surge, but tested again the following day anyway. It was positive again! What does that mean? This isn't a problem. You may have caught your surge on its way up and on the way down. It is more common to only get one day of positive testing, but it is not uncommon to have two days of a positive tests. Even three days isn't uncommon, but it is worth consulting a doctor in case you have high LH levels. If I'm taking my basal body temperature, what's the point in doing expensive OPKs? The OPK will tell you when to expect ovulate before it happens, while BBT only tells you after it's over. The thermal shift occurs *after* ovulation in response to increased progesterone production. One your temperature goes up, it's too late to get pregnant. By using OPKs, you'll know before ovulation and can be sure to get your timing right. If I am doing OPK's, why should I still bother to take my BBTs? There are a couple of reasons why it would be a good idea. The first is so that you can see if your LH surge corresponds properly with your thermal shift. You should shift 1-3 days after your positive OPK, though sometimes it takes as long as five days for those with a slow shift. Another reason is to make sure your temperatures stay up for at least 10 days after ovulation. Your falling BBT will let you know when your period is starting, but if your temperature stays elevated 18 days past ovulation you should test for pregnancy. What if I don't detect a surge, but I have a thermal shift? You probably missed your surge. Some people need to test more than once per day. If you've had a test that was half-color and then negative the next day, plus a thermal shift, in your next cycle you should consider testing twice a day (noon and 8 p.m. would be a good choice). Another possibility is that you didn't hold your urine long enough. Several tests suggest holding urine for 4 hours before checking for LH. I used an OPK, my timing was perfect, why didn't I get pregnant? It often takes a number of perfectly timed cycles before pregnancy is achieved. The chances of getting pregnant each cycle varies a bit with age. If you are 20-25, your chance per cycle are about 25%. From there they begin to fall off. At 25-30 your chances are about 20%. At 30-35 they are about 15%. After 35 they may be about 10% per ovulatory cycle, and the chances continue the downward trend. This means that the average woman under 30 will get pregnant within 6 cycles. If you don't succeed after a year, it is a good idea to consult a fertility specialist. Women in their early 30s get pregnant on average by the end of 9 cycles. Mid-30s would be a year. If you are over 35, you should consult a fertility specialist if you have not achieved pregnancy within 6 months. Why 6 months when it can take a year? Because your chances of conception are lower and miscarriage rates are higher -- it is better not to waste time.
