Seller: italicar (329) 100%, Location: Norwich, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 273359101689 2003 Alfa Romeo 156 1.9 JTD At first glance, this decidedly entry level 156 might not look that interesting. But, honestly, this is one of the most unusual and intriguing curios we've ever found in all our years of hunting out quirky Italian cars. For a start, we've never before seen another 156 presented in this highly unusual spec'. The glamour-free, but superbly engineered 1.9 8v JTD engine under the bonnet, steel wheels with a set of genuine Alfa hubcaps still in place, cloth interior (not even the velour sports seats - this is completely unadorned and unashamedly grey plaid) and a steering wheel with not a stitch of leather on it make for a very rare combination. Being such a bog-standard entry, it's a miracle that this car has survived - but not only has it survived, it actually remains in fantastic condition. It has covered just 61k miles from new, and the gleaming Proteo Red paintwork is totally original. It's never had so much as a remedial blow-in and looks all the better for it (see video over on our website). Of course, there are a few minor dings but far fewer than you'd expect of a 15-year-old car. It also drives very well indeed, particuarly after we've treated it to a new bottom wishbone, new upper wishbone, new rear radius arm and some new 'top-hat' bushes for the gearbox linkage while its been under our care (and the MoT will be renewed upon sale, giving you the full 12 months). The timing belt was last renewed under 30k miles ago and it has clearly been very well maintained by its previous owners. Which neatly brings us to another reason this car ranks as one of our favourites. When it was nearly new, with just a few thousand miles on the clock, it was bought by Lotus Cars and used as a 'Development Vehicle'. It still has the Lotus Cars LTD plates on, and we also have the paperwork to verify this unique provenance. In 2010, it was then sold to a Senior Engineer in the firm who kept it himself right up until 2017. It has gained a few gadgets and gizmoes secreted about the interior during it's time in Hethel - just don't ask us what they all do! We half expected to find a hidden switch to make a machine gun pop out of the front bumper - it's all very James Bond. An incredibly unusual 156 model in exceptionally well preserved condition, and a unique slice of Lotus history to boot. Take this unassumingly modest 156 to, say, National Alfa Day and amid the GTA's of every hue, and the line-up of supposedly ultra-rare SZ's and RZ's, we can guarantee you there won't be another car quite like this one anywhere to be seen. Condition: Used, Condition: A couple of small dings to the bodywork, but overall an exceptionally clean & straight 15-year-old car. We've sorted out a few niggles on the suspension side of things and it will be sold with a new MoT, drives very well.
